India has four main marriage-related statutes: Special Marriage Act 1954 (civil), Hindu Marriage Act 1955 (Hindu/Buddhist/Sikh/Jain), Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872 (Christians), and Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act 1937 (Muslims). Each governs ceremony, registration, divorce and rights differently. Here is the complete 2026 overview for marriage-minded singles.
